Alexandra Shelley

I believe there are two key tools every writer needs, whether they’re working on their first book or their tenth: tenacity and a great writing mentor. As one of the most stubborn people I know, the tenacity part came easily for me. Finding the right mentor did not.

After searching for several years, and before I signed on with my publisher, I found Alexandra Shelley. An independent editor and teacher, Alexandra guides writers through the entire novel-writing process, from crafting characters, to plot development, to line-editing. She is not only an excellent editor, but also a lovely person.

I’ve worked with Alexandra for ten years and hope to continue working with her as long as I can type on the page.

Never Fail Creamy Caramel Icing

Many readers have asked me for the recipe for the caramel cake icing that is mentioned in THE HELP and I am happy to provide it here:

Never Fail Creamy Caramel Icing

2 1/2 c. sugar
1 slightly beaten egg
1 stick of butter
3/4 c. milk
1 t. vanilla

Melt 1/2 cup of sugar in iron skillet slowly, until brown and runny. Mix egg, butter, remaining sugar, and milk in a saucepan and cook over a low flame until butter melts. Turn the heat up to medium and add the browned sugar. Cook until it reaches the soft ball stage or until mixture leaves sides of pan. This takes about 10 minutes. Remove from fire, let cool slightly, and add vanilla. Beat until right consistency to spread. If it gets too thick add a little cream. This will ice a 2 layer cake.
